As part of its commitment to its mission of developing holistic UST Angelicum learners, the Guidance Counseling and Testing Department held its annual celebration of the Guidance Awareness Week (GAW) last November 4-8, 2019. This year’s GAW focused on mental health with the theme, “Each Mind Matters: Understanding Youth’s Mental Health”. The theme aimed to raise awareness to capture the salient concerns of the learners and to know what we can do about it. It also includes activities which aims to explore their interests, talents, and capabilities as a learners.
The department organized different activities for the different levels. The PK 2 to YS 4 levels had a Group Guidance Activity about feelings and emotions. YS 5 and 6 levels had a Poster-Slogan Making Contest. Winners in the Poster Making Contest from YS 5 were Zoe Benig (3rd Place), Jaziel Phoebe Gaetos (2nd Place), and Cheska Nicole Mamuad (1st Place). The overall champion in the Poster-Slogan Making Contest in YS 6 is Cassandra Mae Aquino from YS 6 W1.
Also, the Mental Health Seminar Series included the Study Lapis at Papel: Study Skills Towards Success talk for the YS 7 learners facilitated by Mr. Dan Alberto. Likewise, Ms. Christina Viloria was invited to talk about the ABC’s of Relationships: Ways to Establish Healthy Relationship to the YS 8 learners. VMG professionals also gave an orientation about #FAMGOALS: How to Communicate with Your Family Members to the YS 9 learners, while Ms. Maria Carrisa Sanchez gave a talk about Understanding Self: Mastering Controls of Your Emotion Buttons to the YS 10 learners. Meanwhile, the seminar about ‘Beat the Clock: Managing Your Time for a Healthy Mind for YS 11 learners was facilitated by Mr. Altheo Patrick Alvarez. Ms. Fatima Manalang also gave a talk about Mind Your Health towards Success to the SHS 1 students, while Mr. Joselito Ortiz and Ms. Jocelyn Ortiz gave a talk about Understanding Youth’s Mental Health to the SHS 2 and College students. The UST Angelicum Staff and Faculty also joined the KKK: Kapihan para sa Kalusugan ng Kaisipan held at the Faculty Lounge.
Apart from seminars and competitions, fun games and exciting exhibits were also displayed to help the learners develop awareness about mental health.
In the pursuit of continuous school development to deal with the changes and challenges of 21st century education, the administrators of UST Angelicum College visited the Dominican International School (DIS) in Dazhi, Zhongshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan on July 4, 2019.
The delegates to the General Chapter of the Order of Preachers from different countries held their world conference in July in Bien Hoa in Vietnam, where the Dominican family has an important presence. After the Mass of the Holy Spirit on July 13, 2019, the plenary session elected the 87th successor of St. Dominic, and the 88th Master of the Order in the person of Rev. Fr. Gerard Francisco P. Timoner, O. P.
UST Angelicum welcomed the new academic year 2019-2020 with the Mass of the Holy Spirit which was held on August 7, 2019. The Mass, which coincided with the celebration of the Feast of St. Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers, was presided by the Pro-Vice-Rector of the school, Rev. Fr. Ferdinand L. Bautista, O. P. and concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Noel Castor, O. P., the school’s Director for Financial Affairs, Rev. Fr. Rudolf Seño, O.P. and the new Chaplain of the Basic Education Department, Rev. Fr. Arden Dacuma, O. P. Rev. Reynor Munsayac also joined during the celebration.
Despite the rainy weather last weekend, the BEC Youth Volunteers were all excited to attend the Team Building and Planning Session organized by the Office of the Religious Affairs last September 14, 2019 with the theme, ‘ Using One’s Gifts in Serving Others’ (1 Peter 4:10).
UST Angelicum bagged eight awards at the Philippine Student Quill Awards, including the Top Award for Communication Skills.
